Friday Newsletter: №6

Hey Friends and welcome back to my 6th Friday Newsletter!

Every week I’m sharing: One Insight, One Source and One Question which I found particularly striking or useful, so you can read, reflect and take action.

This one will be dedicated to self-confidence and fear of judgement by others.

Weekly insight

“In order to feel confident, you need to act confident”.

I think many of us are familiar with “imposter syndrome”: that nagging feeling of self-doubt even despite evident success (here is a good video describing it).

I’ve experienced it often throughout my life: now as a new coach, last year as a new people manager, and before that as a new Googler. The list goes on and on :)

It could be a rather unpleasant and lonely feeling, which makes us to believe that “we don’t deserve to be here” or that "we are not good enoughyet to do something. This of course affects our confidence, making us see ourselves as small and insignificant.

The good news is:

  • Everyone is feeling it from time to time (even the most senior or “successful” people). And as any other emotions: it comes and goes (depending on certain tasks, situations or people around), so don’t see it as a permanent state. Think of it as "imposter moments."

  • It actually means that you are growing and stepping out of your comfort zone. It is easy to stay confident if you know your role inside out and you’ve been doing it for years. But without change, where’s the opportunity to thrive?

So, what can you do when your self-confidence is low?

  1. Write down how you feel right now. What are your thoughts about yourself? Most importantly, what actions are you taking now?

  2. Now imagine feeling completely confident. What actions would you take with this mindset? Spend some time to reflect, no rush here.

  3. Then, start taking some actions like that “confident person”. And as you start taking different actions than before (supported by the positive outcome/feedback from others), your confidence with the time will naturally grow.

Don’t let these temporary impostor feelings stop you from acting and achieving your goals. They will pass, but you don’t want to lose days, weeks, months, or even years waiting for them to fade.

Weekly Source

This video was my biggest highlight this week: a very inspiring 2h interview describing not only how to start your business, while combining it with your corporate 9/5 job, but also addressing so many good questions:

  • How to find energy to work on your side-project when you are completely drained at your work (and can only watch Netflix)?

  • Is it a good idea to leave your corporate job to start something new? What the best balancing strategy here?

  • What business ideas are good and what questions should you ask yourself? And many more insights, really love it!

Weekly Question

In the coaching sessions people share a lot of frustration that they can’t start & consistently doing what they really want due to:

  1. The fear of judgement by others or

  2. Being not good/confident enough to start something new.

The question I invite you to reflect on is the following:

  • What would be the real cost of not starting what you want now for your future-self?
